“El Camino del Usekol” or The Road of the Usekol is a video game created by Costa Rican developers as part of their cultural products brand Juego Ditso which through video-games and table games hopes to introduce users to legends, mythology and tales of indigenous Costa Rican communities.
This video-game is a strategy and adventure game within the Role-Playing Genre, in which players take on the role of characters in a fictional setting. The Road of the Usekol is about the adventures of Tanú (female) and Sierke (male), two native Costa Ricans in the road to becoming the Usekol of their clan, the last Talamanca chief; the scenery is based in the forests of Guayabo, Delta and Diquis. The Usekol is the main political and religious leader of the pre-Columbian era, who was said to have incredible and magical powers.
The first stage of the game or beta version was launched this October 12 (see video below). The art design was done by Mariño Visual Design and Communication Studio and the programming by the Omar Dengo Foundation. This is another of several games that have been successfully created by Costa Rican companies.
“Comics, card games, table games, video-games and movies have always been part of my life, but n my first years in college, my associate Nancy Camacho and I , noticed that there was nothing in the market that we could call “ours”, in other words, completely Costa Rican, that’s when we started investigating about Costa Rican legends and things of that nature and we came up with the treasure of the diverse indigenous cultures existing in our country”, said Jonathan Mariño to Level Up Magazine.
Mariño Studio is currently seeking financing to conclude the project through sponsoring or crowdfunding.
