Las Vegas, May 3 (EFE).– American Floyd Mayweather Jr. won a unanimous victory over the Philippines’ Manny Pacquiao in a welterweight title unification bout that featured the largest purse in boxing history.

Mayweather put on a display of boxing skills in Saturday night’s fight and Pacquiao was never able to get to him.

“I wasn’t getting hit by a lot of shots unless I sat there in the pocket,” Mayweather said.

The 38-year-old Mayweather, who is undefeated as a professional, is expected to bank nearly $200 million from what many in the media were calling the “Fight of the Century.”

“Manny Pacquiao is a tough competitor,” Mayweather said. “My dad (trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.) wanted me to do more. He’s a very awkward fighter. I had to take my time and watch him very close.”

Pacquiao’s take could reach $100 million once all the revenues from the fight are totaled up in the next few weeks.

“I thought I caught him many more times than he hit me,” Pacquiao said, referring to the judges’ scoring of the fight.

“I was never hurt,” the 36-year-old Pacquiao, who is now 57-6, with two draws, said. “Very surprised by the score.”

The three judges, all from the United States, gave the edge to Mayweather, with judge Dave Moretti scoring the fight 118-110 for the undefeated champ, while judges Burt Clemens and Glenn Feldman both scored the bout 116-112 for the American.

Mayweather, who is 48-0, said he planned to fight once more before retiring, with the bout set for September.

“He is a true champion at heart, and we both did our best tonight. When the books are written, it will be a great fight,” Mayweather said. EFE
