The United States embassy in Costa Rica began the celebration of the 242 years of independence the evening of July 3rd with a formal gathering with personnel of the American Embassy and representatives of the Costa Rican government.

“The United States was built in the principles of freedom, democracy and liberty and its these founding principles that strengthen our two countries in friendship, the United States and Costa Rica share their love for freedom, democracy and liberty”, said US ambassador to Costa Rica, Sharon Day.

“On this day 242 years ago, our founding fathers declared the United States of America an independent nation, they created this new nation not based in common history or a common necessity, but an idea, an idea of country where all people would be treated equally, where liberty and justice would prevail and were the government would be elected by the people, for the people where freedom of speech and religion would be protected and the institutions of government would be stronger than any one individual. These were bold ideas from bold men. (…) Now over two centuries later those foundational values are still alive and well today.”

“Today we recognize the incredible vision of our founding fathers and honor the core values underpinning the great United States of America”, stated Day.

Vice-President of Costa Rica and Minister of Foreign Affairs Epsy Campbell, also gave a speech during this activity, congratulating the United States in this important celebration.

“For me it is a great coincidence that this is your first 4th of July in Costa Rica, and I would like to thank you and the personnel of your embassy the warmth welcoming that we have had today”, said Campbell.

Campbell also highlighted the important milestones that the United States has achieved in the 242 years of independence, were the nation has continued to give important steps towards the defense of human rights and liberty.

“We have seen with hope, the decision of the United States to end family separations, we understand that the migratory phenomenon has always been complex and hard, but we should never forget the dignity of all people and the importance of maintaining the solidarity and fraternity towards those that aspire to a better life, especially because the United States has been built with the work of many immigrants that later became American. For the past 167 years the United States and Costa Rica have aa cordial and close relationship in great measure because of the values that we share and practice. The concern for liberty and freedom unite us”, stated Campbell.
