Two U.S. citizens, a man and a woman drowned today in a river waterhole known as El Salto de Belen, Nicoya, Guanacaste.

According to preliminary information, the Red Cross received the alert at 11:35 a.m. this Wednesday, September 19; the foreigners were staying in a hotel in Samara and decided to visit this place to enjoy the fresh water and the waterfall.

A witness stated to local media that he received the alert from another tourist of last name Anderson that was with the victims at the time, apparently the man, decided to jump in the waterhole unaware of the depth of the same (approximately 23 ft.), when the wife saw that he was in trouble she jumped in to try to help him, their friend went to get help but when she arrived back the couple had drowned.

The man, 48-years-old, was identified as Darren Duane Mizokami, his wife was Kimberly T. Mizokami, age 41. The couple arrived to the country along with Anderson, a family friend, on September 13 and had been visiting several tourist sites in the country, among them La Fortuna, San Carlos and Rincon de la Vieja and Tamarindo in Guanacaste.
