After 8 years, the Turrialba Volcano National Park will reopen its doors to visitors on December 4, confirmed the National System of Areas of Conservation (SINAC).

The reopening of this National Park will allow the reactivation of the local economy, especially hotels, restaurants, and local tourism businesses. The Park closed doors back in 2012 when the Volcano increased its activity which continued through 2016; since then, the activity has decreased and the National Emergency Commission along with the National University’s Volcanology and Seismology Research Institute (OVSICORI) and other institutions have been monitoring the Volcano and working on improvements to guarantee the security and enjoyment of visitors.

“Once the Turrialba volcano considerably diminished its activity we have been responsibly working hand in hand with other entities on the necessary measures to reopen the park and benefit the local economy and businesses close to the area”, commented Rafael Gutierrez from SINAC.

Having a safe and controlled access to the volcano should also help prevent illegal entries to the park as it has occurred in the past and that have ended up triggering rescue missions.
