In April, a Costa Rican woman, Eugenia Cartín, said a call she had made to complain about her Internet service with Tigo had been released on social media, and had caused her immense emotional strife and also affected her professional work as a translator, according to reports in local media.

During the 15-minute call, apparently Cartín used very strong language.

In the aftermath of the public disclosure of her personal information and the content of her call, which went viral on social media, Cartín on May 5 brought a suit for a half a million dollars in personal and economic damages against Millicom, the Tigo brand parent company, which is now wending its way through Costa Rican courts.

This week in response to a court proceeding, Tigo Costa Rica said they do not accept responsibility for the release of Cartín’s call on social media, according to a report to the daily digital Spanish news outlet CRHoy.com

The telecommunications company Tigo said it is possible that Cartín herself recorded and filtered the audio in which she is heard arguing with one of the operators of the company, according to CRHoy.com.

Cartin and her lawyer, Rodolfo Alvarado, said via telephone to CRHoy.com in response that,

“Tigo’s response is irresponsible, unlawful, malicious. They blame Doña Eugenia for uploading the audio which is absolutely fallacious and illogical. We are totally disappointed by a company of transnational and public nature that did irreparable damage to a client and indicates, even irresponsibly, that my client has profited, from this audio, which is absolutely uncertain.”

Alvarado added that Cartín has had a decline in her translation business of close to 80 percent since the incident.

CRHoy.com said they were unable to reach the company’s lawyer for further details.

Millicom International Cellular SA is an international telecommunications and media company. It offers a wide range of digital services to more than 63 million customers primarily under the Tigo brand in fourteen markets in Africa and Latin America. Its online partnerships are active in more than 40 markets, according to Wikipedia.
