Emilio Canales
Agents from the Office of Judicial Investigations (Spanish initials: OIJ) assigned to the Liberia region recently arrested three men suspected to be involved in the disappearance of an expat businessman in Costa Rica. Furthermore, the dead body of a man was found near the banks of the Colorado River near the town of Curubande, which is part of the Liberia canton of Guanacaste.
The Costa Rica Star previously published a letter written by the father and sister of the missing expat in question:
We are writing this heartbreaking letter to all the news media outlets in Costa Rica so that everyone is aware of the disappearance of Emilio Canales Redondo.
Emilio is a Mexican national. He lives in Liberia, Guanacaste. His car was found abandoned in the Rodeito neighborhood of Liberia, about 50 meters away from a junkyard. His car is a silver Toyota Yaris, and it bears the license plate BFH-606.
The security guard at his house was the last person to see him on Friday, August 7th, at around one in the morning. He lives in Costa Rica due to work-related duties, and it seems as if his employer already reported his missing status to the police.
The missing person report was first received by Fuerza Publica, the national police force of Costa Rica, in Liberia. Soon after the report was filed, OIJ agents began investigating the case with the few clues provided by the Mr. Canales’ employer and his associates in both Mexico and Costa Rica.
On Mother’s Day, the OIJ agents put together special “snatch” teams to conduct arrests and obtain evidence in this case. The teams carried out dawn raids at three residences in two rough neighborhoods in Liberia: Rojas Chaves and July 25th. Three men were arrested; two of them are under the age of 18. No shots were fired during the raids.
Once the suspects were in custody, some agents conducted interrogations while detectives pieced together the evidence they gathered thus far. Armed with that knowledge, they headed to a desolate section of Curubande, a rural community of Guanacaste. It was in Curubande where the aforementioned dead body was found; at this time, forensic agents are conducting post mortem examinations to determine if the body in currently in their custody is of the missing Mr. Canales.
