Last year President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado, signed Law number 9875 to Transfer the Holidays (that fall on weekends or mid-week) to Mondays with the purpose of promoting national tourism during the years 2020 through 2024 with the purpose of helping reactive the tourism sector.
Below you will find the list of holidays that fall on weekends or mid-week that will be transferred to Mondays:
Saturday, May 1, 2021, will be enjoyed Monday, May 3, 2021.
Sunday, July 25, 2021, will be moved to Monday, July 26, 2021.
Wednesday, September 15, 2021, will be enjoyed Monday, September 13, 2021.
Wednesday, December 1, 2021, will be moved to Monday, November 29, 2021.
*Although April 11th (Celebration of the Rivas Battle) falls on a Sunday, this holiday was not moved to Monday so as to not affect companies, since Holy Week falls in that same month and Easter Thursday and Good Friday (April 1st and April 2nd respectively).
Beach hotels have reported occupancy of between 70-80% while mountain lodges report between 45-50%.
The tourism sector is far from the numbers reached in 2019 and a full recovery will take years, however, national tourism and the opening of air borders in the last months of 2020 has helped reactivate the industry.
