Suicide-bombings Tuesday at Istanbul’s Atatürk airport left 36 people dead and 120 wounded, Turkish public television network TRT said

Among the dead are five police officers, TRT’s English service reported.

Istanbul Gov. Vasip Sahin said earlier that the assault was carried out by three suicide terrorists.

The explosions occurred around 9:30 p.m., TRT said.

An employee at Istanbul’s main airport said in comments to a radio station that one blast occurred near the security checkpoint outside the entrance to the international departures terminal.

Dozens of ambulances rushed to the airport and media outlets reported that taxi drivers were transporting the injured to hospitals in this metropolis at the meeting point of Europe and Asia.

All flights were canceled and the airport will remain closed until 8 a.m. Wednesday.

“We were at passport control. We heard gunfire. There were four people and they began shooting at people. Then they detonated themselves,” witness Mine Iyidinc told CNNTürk.

“First I heard shots and then an explosion,” Gozde Aydinoglu said. “More shots and people running everywhere.”

Atatürk is Turkey’s largest airport and one of the world’s busiest, handling 61 million passengers last year.

Istanbul has been the scene this year of a pair of suicide bombings by Islamic State that claimed more than a dozen lives, while 11 people died here June 6 in an attack on a police bus carried out a group linked to the Kurdish PKK organization.

In Ankara, two PKK-linked car bombings targeting Turkish security forces have left more than 60 people dead.

No group has claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s explosions at Atatürk airport. EFE
