For the first time in history,  six Costa Ricans will represent the country at the e-Sports World Championship 2016 organized by the International e-Sports Federation (IeSF) to be held in Ancol Beach City Auditorium, Jakarta, in Indonesia  from October 6th – 9th.

A national competition was held to determine the winners that would travel to Jakarta to represent the country; in total 40 LOL teams and 80 Hearthstone players clashed in a direct elimination tournament that came to an end in the GamerFest held last Saturday.

Professional gamers Luis Escobar, Alonso Reyes, Steven Cordero, Josue Rodriguez and Esteban Matamoros are the members of team Creta Gaming and Costa Rica’s National E-Sports Team that will compete in League of Legends; they each have between 3 and 4 years of experience in national and international competitions.  Carlos Perez is the country’s representative in the game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.

League of Legends (LOL) is an online multiplayer strategy game developed by RIOT Games and it is one of the world’s most popular online video games.  In this game two teams of five players each go into battle with the objective of dominating the other’s base and destroying the enemy “Nexus” (a structure at the heart of the base protected by defensive structures).

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is a single player collectible card game developed by Blizzard Entertainment. In April of 2016 Blizzard reported over 50 million players. The game uses decks of thirty cards with characters and creatures from the Warcraft series.

This is the 8th edition of the IeSF World Championship, the only international e-Sports competition base on nationality, the 7th edition had the presence of 33 countries totaling 180 participants and the overall champion was Serbia, followed by Korea in second place.

The total prize pool is 54,000 USD, which is broken down to 20,000 USD for each LOL and CS (Counter Strike) team titles, 4,000 USD for Hearthstone winner and 10,000 USD for overall champion nation.

Costa Rica faces tough competition but this is a great first opportunity that will open doors and give a great deal of experience to the community of professional gamers in the country.
