Scotland Yard, the London Metropolitan Police, believes that a terrorist attack in Britain is a matter of time.

The Metropolitan police commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said, in an article published on the Mail on Sunday, that he could not promise that there will never be an attack, noting that the security forces are working hard to avoid what may occur.

Hogan-Howe added that he understood the people’s concerns following the attacks in Paris, Nice and Brussels, recalling that the level of terrorist threat in the U.K. remains “severe”, the second highest of five possible threat levels, and that means an attack is highly likely.

“I feel and understand that fear and as the police officer in charge of preventing such an attack, I know that you want me to reassure you. I am afraid I cannot do that entirely,” he said.

“Our threat level has been at severe for two years – it remains there. It means an attack is highly likely. You could say it is a case of when, not if,” Hogan-Howe explained.

The commissioner explained that the police have foiled terrorist plots since the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby in May 2013, stabbed by two jihadists in the street when he was about to enter military barracks. EFE
