(EFE).- South Korean giant Samsung Electronics said Thursday it is going to examine the mobile phone that caught fire aboard a US plane and forced its evacuation, to check if it is one of the replacement Galaxy Note 7 phones.

A day after a smartphone caught fire aboard a Southwest Airlines plane at the Louisville international airport in Kentucky, US, a statement by the company said until the device is retrieved, it cannot confirm whether the incident involves the new Note 7.

“We are working with the authorities and Southwest now to recover the device and confirm the cause. Once we have examined the device we will have more information to share,” it said.

The Southwest flight was ready for take-off Wednesday morning, when smoke was detected from the cabin, emanating from the smartphone in a passenger’s pocket.

As the phone caught fire, the owner threw it onto the floor, according to US media reports, and the plane was evacuated.

The user later said it was a Galaxy Note 7 phablet he had bought on Sept. 21 and which carried the green battery icon, representing Note 7 devices sold by the company post-recall.

Technology news site The Verge published pictures of the burnt handset along with its box, which shows a black box icon that identifies Samsung’s safe Note 7 handsets.

Early last month, Samsung had withdrawn Note 7 from the markets and ordered a recall after 35 cases were recorded of the handset catching fire during charging due to faulty batteries.

The company had resumed sale of the new, safe handsets in mid-September. EFE
