Roca Bruja or Witch Rock, the giant rock in Playa Naranjo within the Santa Rosa National Park in Guanacaste also suffered the effects of Tropical Storm Nate.

The famous rock now has a crack on its northern side, but in the south side some of the rock broke off and fell to the ocean, photos captured by surfers in the area show parts of broken rock.

“We don’t know which day exactly it happened, but it was during the days when Tropical Storm Nate was affecting the country, it didn’t only cracked the rock but also some of the mountains surrounding these beaches, like in Ollies Point for example”, said Christian Boos, surfer in the area to the Costa Rica Surf Federation.

The Santa Rosa National Park was closed to the public for several days as a preventive measure taken by the National System of Conservation Areas, which is why it is hard to know exactly when the rock cracked.

The area of Roca Bruja is one of the best surfing spots in Costa Rica, very popular specially among local surfers; the name Witch Rock, according to locals was given to this rock because in the past when the wind blew against a portion of the rock it would produce a scare whistle like noise.

Access to these beach is not easy but is definitely worth visiting; there are other close by beaches, among them Playa Huevo, nestled between several small islands that for a bay where the water is almost transparent.
