Agents from the Office of Judicial Investigations (Spanish initials: OIJ) arrested a 30-year old man for allegedly attempting to sexually extort her on social media in Costa Rica.

According to a recent news report filed by Allan Chacon Soto of daily tabloid Diario Extra, the arrest took place at a public park in Hatillo, a series of populous districts located just south of the capital city of Costa Rica.

The man had apparently established an online relationship with an 18-year old woman on Facebook. The relationship continued via telephone and WhatsApp messages, and at some point a compromising photograph was shared by the woman.

After the man received a naked photograph of the young woman, he insisted that they meet in person. When she declined, the blackmail started. At some point, the man set a firm date and time for a meeting in Hatillo, and he warned that he would publish the intimate photo if she failed to show up.

When the woman filed her complaint with the OIJ, she claimed that she shared the naked image by accident. OIJ agents identified the suspect and mounted surveillance before proceeding to arrest the man, who was very surprised by the turn of events. A search of his smartphone revealed that he was indeed in possession of the offending photo, and his messages over Facebook messenger and WhatsApp were proof of his sexual blackmail intentions.

Online revenge porn is the sexually explicit portrayal of one or more people distributed without their consent via Internet media. Sexually explicit images or video may be made by a partner of an intimate relationship with the knowledge and consent of the subject, or it may be made without his or her knowledge. In Costa Rica, such practices are considered criminal acts.
