San Juan, Dec. 7 — Puerto Rican boxer Cindy Serrano’s hoping for an unusual gift this Christmas, said the Spanish newswire EFE.
If she wins a match this Saturday, Cindy and her sibling Amanda would become the first sister duo to hold simultaneous world boxing titles.
By capturing the World Boxing Organization‘s featherweight crown Saturday with a win over Colombia’s Calixta Salgado (35-9-1), Serrano and her younger sister Amanda would also become the first female boxers to hold the same title in the same year.
“The title would be my Christmas present,” Cindy Serrano (30-1-1) told EFE prior to the official press conference in advance of Saturday’s fight card at the Cosme Beitia Salamo Coliseum in the San Juan suburb of Cataño, an event that will mark her first-ever bout in Puerto Rico.
She said the Puerto Rican crowd could help her win a title that her sister captured on two occasions, most recently by defeating Salgado by TKO on July 30 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
But Amanda left that title vacant when she moved down a weight class to fight as a junior featherweight, becoming the champion in that category October 18 with a victory over Hungary’s Alexandra Lazar in San Juan.
“It would be a great honor if Cindy were also to become champion. Since she began her career in 2003, that’s always been her dream and I’m very optimistic she’ll achieve it,” Amanda, Cindy’s sparring partner ahead of Saturday’s match, said.
“Cindy’s victory would not only be a victory for her and our family, but for Puerto Rico and all women,” she said. EFE
