Adele and Matt Allen are a young British couple from Brighton, a pretty city of East Sussex, located in the southern region of England. They have two children: Ostara, who turned one year old recently, and Ulysses, who is five years old and still breastfeeds.

The Allen family would like to move to Costa Rica. To fund their Brexit, so to speak, they are hoping to collect 100,000 pound sterling from online donors. They believe that this amount will be sufficient for them to move from their one-bedroom flat (apartment) in Brighton to a nice plot of land in Costa Rica, where they wish to live off-grid, sustainable lives.

The crowdfunding efforts of the Allen family are posted at FundMyTravel.com, and they recently embarked in a media tour for this purpose. Their media appearances have not raised much in the way of quid, but they have certainly raised eyebrows and sharp sentiment on social media.

It so happened that the Allen family appeared on This Morning, a British daytime television programme (talk show) on the popular ITV network. The family was there to discuss off-grid parenting, an alternative lifestyle described by News.com.au as follows:

[The couple has] opted to raise their two kids outside of the mainstream education system. But viewers were left shocked when their youngest child tottered off to wee (urinate) on the studio floor — live on air.

As one-year-old Ostara stood and stared defiantly in to the camera, a small puddle of urine began to form around her feet.

And so This Morning turned into a Monty Pythonesque comedy of manners, with the Allen children misbehaving to the sheer horror of the audience while Adele explained why she would not discipline Ulysses, who went way beyond cheeky (irreverent):

“We speak to him respectfully knowing he’s an equal human being to us.

“He is a highly sensitive child in nature and gets overwhelmed very easily.

“It’s important to him to not have strong, authoritative discipline as he doesn’t react well to that.”

Ulysses cannot yet read, but he is proficient with an iPad.

In the post-Brexit currency exchange, 100,000 battered pounds are about USD$131K, which should be plenty for the Allen family to start their new lives in Costa Rica. Even with multiple incomes, most families in Costa Rica would need about 15 years to earn that amount.
