Tropical Storm Nate‘s damages and effects are still being tabulated and addressed in Costa Rica.

The storm’s 24 hours of straight rain in most of the country has affected many parts of the economy, as well as forever changed people’s lives who lost their homes, businesses, schools and even communities.

Golfito’s duty free zone in the southern Pacific region of Costa Rica is no exception.

The “deposito de Golfito” saw its visitors drop from a daily weekday average of 150 to just 40 in the days following Nate’s rainfall.

Weekend passes can reach up to 800 on a good day for Golfito merchants. Passes for making purchases in the duty free area can be obtained by people who stay at least 24 hours in the area.

People as well as goods were prevented from moving throughout much of the country due to road blockages in the wake of the storm.

To increase sales and attract buyers, merchants will be offering discounts of more than 50 percent, said Carlos Fernandez, executive director of the Golfito Duty Free Commercial Zone.
