After an all-night search Saturday night, yesterday morning police arrested a man in Edén de Guácimo, Limón as the prime suspect in mutilating and decapitating an 8-year-old boy Saturday night after the boy went to visit a neighbour early Saturday evening, reported the Public Security Ministry yesterday morning.
Yesterday evening, Channel 7 television station, Teletica, reported that the suspect’s neighbors burned his house to the ground after Judicial Investigative Police (OIJ) had finished collecting evidence Sunday.
Local residents helped lead police in the detention of 23-year-old suspect, Jordi Campos Mendoza, after several said the last time they had seen the murdered boy was when he entered Campos’ house.
Campos was found to have blood on his clothing, apparently as a result of killing 8-year-old Kendall Martínez whose decapitated body was found 300 meters from Campos’ house on the bank of the Jimenez River, detailed Teletica.
When police received the report of the missing boy Saturday evening and discovered the decapitated body around 8 p.m., over 200 officials and special search units were activated to search for suspects in the surrounding Guácimo, Limón area as well as the country’s borders, reported the Security Ministry.
Police Chief Juan José Andrade said, “This type of act is what shake us police up the most, because of the vulnerability of children, and the violence with which he was attacked. I want to recognize the motivation and effort by all the officials who worked Saturday night and Sunday morning to find the suspect; nobody would leave until the suspect was caught.”
