Football fans in Costa Rica have a new home on the Internet. Goool.cr is an online social network that aims to bring together Tico fans of the world’s most popular sport.

According to Yariela Novo of digital newspaper Costa Rica Hoy, the idea of creating a dedicated social network for football (or soccer for some anglophone countries) began two years ago. The company behind the network is E-Way, and one of its principals explained that over the last three weeks their website has received about 10,000 visitors and 1,400 new users have registered.

New users are encouraged to indicate their function within the realm of the world’s most popular sport. For example, professional players can sign up and identify themselves, and the same goes for trainers, journalists, photographers, businesses, pick-up game organizers, etc. There are currently two chat modes in which users can chat among the members of global network or just within their circle of friends.

While the Goool.cr network has strong presence from users based in Costa Rica, it is not limited to Tico football fans. International members are also welcome to sign up, and the site is already creating football-themed conversation that goes beyond Costa Rica. A recent blog entry by a featured blogger in Goool.cr touches on an interesting interview that the great English striker Gary Lineker gave to BBC Radio regarding his performance in the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy.

On that interview, the now-retired Mr. Lineker explained that during a match against the National Football Team of Ireland, he experienced stomach and intestinal discomfort at halftime. Back on the field, Mr. Lineker tried to take the ball from an Irish defender when he suffered a bout of incontinence right on the pitch. Mr. Lineker stated that it was fortunately a rainy day in Italy, and if you play back video from the game you can see his canine-like rubbing against the natural grass in an effort to get himself cleaned up.

Goool.cr is the latest foray into Internet social media by entrepreneurs based in Costa Rica. Back in May, The Costa Rica Star reported on the debut of My Babilon, a new social networking platform that features real-time translation for international users to communicate in any language.
