With a score of 1-0 against our national beach football team, Guatemala came away the champion of Copa Pilsener at La Costa del Sol, a short tournament played in El Salvador during Semana Santa. With that loss, the beach football players from Costa Rica were relegated to the last place of the four-team playoff.
The Costa del Sol beach football tournament was organized by athletic and tourism organizations in El Salvador, and sponsored by the popular Pilsener beer brand. Two Central American teams were invited, Costa Rica and Guatemala, as well as the South American powerhouse team representing Uruguay.
Over the last two decades, El Salvador has been experiencing a higher exodus of people from the capital city of San Salvador and its suburbs to the beaches during Holy Week. As a result of the increased tourism, the Costa del Sol tournament attracted a good number of spectators during the long holiday.
On Wednesday, April 4th, La Sele played the first game against the host team of El Salvador. The Tico beach football players were an easy match for the hosts, who beat us by a wide margin. The final score was 10-5, with two Tico players ejected from the game. The lineup included players from Saprissa, Puntarenas and Punta Leona.
La Sele played the second and final game on Thursday against Guatemala. The game was characterized by tighter gameplay and overall better football than the first match against El Salvador. Guatemala won by the narrow margin of just one goal to none and was crowned the Pilsener champ at Costa del Sol.
Our national team and coach Franklin Zuniga returned home yesterday afternoon. The team will continue preparing for the qualifying rounds of the 2013 FIFA Beach Football World Cup, which will be held in Tahiti. The last Beach World Cup took place in Italy, where Russia took the top honors, followed by Brazil, Portugal and El Salvador.
