Caracas, Jun 6 (EFE).– The body of Italian diplomat Mauro Monciatti, an administrative official at Italy’s consulate in Caracas, was found at his home in an eastern Caracas neighborhood, fellow diplomat Lorenzo Salinas confirmed to EFE on Monday.

Monciatti, 60, died from blunt trauma to the skull, an official with the Cicpc criminal investigative unit, which is conducting the investigation into the Italian’s death, told reporters.

Venezuelan press versions said that the lock at Monciatti’s home had not been tampered with and that he probably died either Saturday night or sometime on Sunday.

The Italian had arrived in Venezuela in January and lived with his spouse, but he was alone at the time he died, Salinas, a press official with the Italian consulate, told EFE.

Italy’s consul in Venezuela, Mauro Lorenzini, went to Monciatti’s home and said that Rome was waiting for the Cicpc investigation to learn the cause of death and the associated circumstances.

The Italian Embassy in Venezuela said in a statement signed by Ambassador Silvio Mignano that the National Italy Festival that was to have been held in the coming days has now been suspended due to the “tragic event that has affected Italian personnel in Caracas.” EFE
