The Costa Rica Ministry of Security launched the prevention campaign “Verano Seguro” or Safe Summer with the objective of bringing down the number of crimes and accidents in this vacation season.

“The purpose of this campaign is that through different operations and actions we can offer national and foreign tourists more safety during their vacation time in the country, but at the same time we want to ask tourists to also contribute by taking care of their belongings, keeping an eye on their children and family members and also consider the authorities recommendations regarding safety precautions” , stated Bernardita Marin, Minister of Public Security ad interim during a press conference.

The operations of the Ministry of Security involve the efforts of the Police, the National Coast Guard Service, Aerial Survaillance, Tourist Police, among others.

During this weekend a cold front will be affecting Costa Rica, the National Emergency Commission warned tourists about strong winds that could cause accidents with branches or trees as well as dangerous conditions at the beaches for swimming and navigation.

Recently the U.S. Department of State ranked Costa Rica as a Level 1 safe country to travel, but normal precautions need to be exercised to avoid being a victim of robberies or other crimes. “Petty theft is the most common crime targeting tourists. Be mindful of your surroundings and keep valuables out of sight in cars”.
