MicroVention, a wholly owned subsidiary of Terumo Corporation and a global neurovascular company announced its plans to grow its operation in Costa Rica, doubling its capacity of production and creating at least 1,100 new jobs in the country in 2019.
The company, located in Zona Franca el Coyol since 2011 would go from their current 7,000 square meters (75,347 square feet) to 14,000 square meters (150,595 square feet). With an investment of over $400 million, the company expects to get its new certified cleanroom and will be hiring personnel to expand its lines of products and the units exported from Costa Rica.
The level of specialization of human resources in the country and the good manufacturing practices in the production of medical devices are part of the reasons that the company chose to expand its operations in Costa Rica, “In addition to these, the excellent structural conditions of Zona Franca Coyol, the closeness to the United States, high quality communication systems and political stability of the country”, commented Marco Bruno, director of MicroVention Costa Rica.
Exports of medical devices in the country have grown considerably in the past years, with 62% between 2014 and 2017, becoming an important part of the Costa Rican exports and economy, representing 27% of the country’s good exportation.
The expansion of the plant in Costa Rica will host 80% of MicroVention-Terumo’s production worldwide.
