The national pastime of the United States is getting even more interesting after a spicy radio interview with the legendary and controversial right fielder Daryl Strawberry.

According to a recent news report filed by Damon Salvadore of the New York Daily News, Strawberry revealed quite a bit of shenanigans that took place during his time with the New York Mets of the National League.

Strawberry sat down to an interview on Mad Dog Sports Radio, a SiriusXM satellite station that subscribers can listen to in Costa Rica via Internet streaming. The occasion of the interview was to warm up sports fans to the ESPN documentary Doc and Daryl, which is about the lives of baseball legends Strawberry and Dwight Gooden.

During the interview, the subject of sex came up, and Strawberry explained that he would sometimes enjoy quickies in the middle of a game. He elaborated on the mechanics of this feat:

It happened between the innings. It worked out well just how crazy it was. It kind of worked out that way. You organize it; you point her out and tell the kid.

By “point her out,” Strawberry probably means picking out “groupies,” uninhibited female fans who tend to follow professional baseball teams on the road. The groupies phenomenon is known to Major League Baseball officials, but this is the first time that someone confesses to sex in the clubhouse.

Strawberry won four World Series, and he was the home run leader in 1988; alas, his personal life beyond the baseball diamond included arrests for soliciting prostitutes, cocaine use and drunken behavior. These days, he is a born-again Christian and occasional evangelist.

In the current season, the New York Mets are not quite at the level of their Strawberry years. According to IDSca.com, leading provider of pay-per-head services in Costa Rica, local sportsbooks are posting odds of 14 for the Mets to win the National League pennant. The former underdogs Chicago Cubs are the current favorites with odds at just 2.
