Emojis are those fun, cute cartoon symbols we use in texts and add to social media posts. Today we celebrate all 2,800 of them, from the over-used face with tears of joy, to the seldom-used person playing water polo.

World Emoji Day was founded in 2014 by Emojipedia founder Jeremy Burge. The purpose of the celebration is to “promote the use of emojis and spread the enjoyment that they bring to all those around us.”
In honor of the day, Apple has announced it is unveiling 70 new emoji characters. They include more hair options to better represent folks with red, gray, curly, or even bald heads. There are many new smiley faces joining the group as well.
New animal emojis include kangaroos, peacocks, parrots and lobsters. Food emojis will now include mango, lettuce, cupcake and moon cake. There will also be new emojis for the day on which they are most used, New Year’s Day.
Quoting the founder of the emoji movement, Jeremy Burge, “I hope people will try using World Emoji Day as an excuse to lighten up their online communications. Honestly, there’s nothing better than when someone who might have seemed a bit aloof via email sends an emoji and you can breathe out, knowing we’re all just humans after all.”
