For all those spending the hot days at the Guanacaste beaches, perhaps you`d like to refresh yourself with a very cold beer; try something different, there´s a new craft beer called Guanaca by Guana Beer Company, made by local entrepreneurs, a Costa Rican couple who aside from wanting to create a unique flavor and successful business also want to ensure their company is environmentally responsible.

The small company currently produces just 2,000 bottles a month, which are sold in some hotels in Guanacaste, like Punta Islita, and a few restaurants.

To produce this small number of bottles, the process consumes close to 4,000 liters of water, usually the water is thrown out after each cooking period, but Andrea Leiva one of the owners of Guana Beer Company, who is a Chemical Engineer, came up with a process that allows them to reuse the water. ¨It was not just about saving water, I was not about to build a company that would have a bad impact on the environment¨, she explains.

Guanaca Beer is just their first product, they hope that in time their company will grow and they can diversify their line of products and distribute them in more places.

The leftovers of barley and malt don´t go to waste either, they make sure to distribute them among the different cattle properties in the Hojancha region to be used for animal consumption.

The couple explained to local site La Voz de Guanacaste, that this particular beer is thought out specifically for the Guanacaste heat, ¨it is refreshing and light¨.
