This Sunday a group of Costa Ricans gathered in front of President Carlos Alvarado’s house to protest against the proposals of crazy new taxes presented by the government in order to possibly qualify for a loan with the IMF (International Monetary Fund) this week.

The group of protesters met in La Sabana and took Route 27 in a caravan which concluded in front of the President’s house in Santa Ana. Holding signs with statements such as “No more taxes”, “IMF, get out” and “Let us work”, the protesters waited for the President to come out of his house but that did not happen, due to this they continued their caravan to the Central Park in San Jose.

Earlier this week the Government presented this Thursday the proposal to negotiate with the International Monetary Fund for a new loan of $1.750 Billion. This plan includes a temporary tax to all financial transaction, a raise in the percentage paid for income tax on salaries, an increase on property taxes and a tax over lottery prizes among other things.
