The Global Environmental Facility’s (GEF) Fund announced that it will destine a total of $12 million to promote the creation and implementation of green politics during the next four years of government.

The raise in the collaboration amount is the result of the trip that President Carlos Alvarado and the Minister of Environment, Carlos Manuel Rodriguez did to Washington last June.

The amount destined by GEF, the biggest public founder for the improvement of the world environment, represents $4 million more in comparison to the amount assigned to the past administration.

Funds will be used in strengthening the Objectives of Sustainable Development in Costa Rica. “This contribution will allow us to advance significantly in the route of achieving carbon neutrality in Costa Rica’s economy”, stated President Alvarado.

The President also highlighted that the country has been an example in the implementation of sustainable solutions, that have allowed the promotion of human development projects based in the protection of nature.

“The Global Environment Facility was established on the eve of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit to help tackle our planet’s most pressing environmental problems. Since then, the GEF has provided over $17.9 billion in grants and mobilized an additional $93.2 billion in co-financing for more than 4500 projects in 170 countries. Today, the GEF is an international partnership of 183 countries, international institutions, civil society organizations and the private sector that addresses global environmental issues.”
