Port-au-Prince, Oct 23 (EFE).- Crowds of Haitian voters accompanied ex-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide as he set off with the presidential candidate of his Lavalas Family party, Marysse Narcisse, in a caravan to close her campaign.

The caravan left from the ex-president’s residence amid a crowd numbering over 1,000 partisans.

Supporters of Aristide and Narcisse waited for hours in front of his residence under the Caribbean sun in a festive atmosphere of music and dancing, with posters and T-shirts publicizing the presidential hopeful.

Most of the crowd was from the sprawling Cite Soleil slum, where last weekend a number of clashes occurred between civilians and police that left 15 people dead and 20 wounded.

Lavalas Family partisans arrived in trucks and on motorcycles, while many walked the several kilometers (miles) from Cite Soleil to the former president’s residence.

When the gates of the residence were finally opened and vehicles of the caravan began to file out, the gathering of supporters cheered Aristide and Narcisse, who stood up and appeared through the opening in their vehicle’s roof to greet the crowd.

The procession started down the road throwing T-shirts to the crowds of supporters, who fought over them and followed the campaign vehicles through the streets of Port-au-Prince.

On Sunday, Haitians will go to the polls to elect their next president.

Survey results indicate that a runoff election will be necessary on Dec. 27 to finally choose who will be the new president, since none of the 56 candidates will obtain the necessary majority in the first round of balloting. EFE
