Two women will be the first same sex couple to get married in Costa Rica on May 26 when it will be finally legal in the country.

The wedding will be broadcasted live by Trece Costa Rica Televisión (Channel 13) and also through social media.

According to Gia Miranda, executive director of the campaign Sí Acepto Costa Rica (I Do Costa Rica), the original idea was to have a big celebration, however, because of the sanitary restrictions , they have opted to have a virtual commemoration that will begin at 9 p.m. on Monday, May 25 with different activities that will include renown speakers from the LGBTI community.

“During times where the country and the world face a difficult situation with the pandemic, this historical milestone is even more relevant as a message of a better future for thousands of same sex couples and families that will receive the legal recognition that they deserve”, commented Miranda.

“For two hours of broadcasting we want to go back in time and how we got to this day, people that have fought to make this a reality”, she continued.

The event will also collect donations for those who have lost their jobs due to the current situation generated by Covid-19.

Costa Rica will become the first Central American country to legalize same sex unions.
