Father’s Day in Costa Rica is celebrated the third Sunday in June, which means this year it falls on June 18.

There isn’t a particular tradition when it comes to celebrating Father’s Day, there are as many options as different types of dads.

If you are looking to do something different from the traditional family lunch and the usual gifts which generally include, ties, socks or underwear, we give you some ideas to surprise your father:

1) Massage: Dads usually don’t spend much on themselves, consider getting him a gift certificate for a massage, pick a place that will make him feel comfortable and preferably a therapist you’ve already tried. If spas are not his thing, try a physical therapy clinic or sports clinic which might make him feel more at ease, try to choose a deep-tissue massage and preferably a 90-minute session.

2) Gift Certificates: If your father is difficult and picky, then perhaps a gift certificate is the way to go, almost all stores now offer this possibility, but if you are not even sure what he wants or needs, malls like Multiplaza have prepaid cards that can be used at ANY STORE in the mall, very convenient and you know he will get exactly what he wants.

3) Time: In today’s busy and hectic lifestyle sometimes it is hard for families to spend quality time together, so perhaps instead of a material gift consider planning a day together, go for a one-day tour, or simply go for lunch or dinner and a movie, if you both like tennis play a match together, or go cycling. If you are on a limited budget then cook a nice lunch or order pizza and watch some movies together, play board games, listen to music, etc.

4) Hobbies: If he has a particular hobby take advantage of this.

5) Photographs: Nowadays all photos are kept digital, pick your favorite photos and print them out, this is always a perfect and thoughtful gift.

6) Technology: Fathers used to always get tool boxes, but now technology is king, from gadgets to accessories, there is a lot to pick from. If he likes spending a lot of time on the couch in front of the TV maybe setting him up with a Netflix account you pay for could be a good idea.

7) Personal care products: Times have changed, and men now also like taking care of their skin and prevent wrinkles but they don’t like having to pay for these products, a personal care kit can go a long way, make sure to include sunblock.

8) Something he’s always wanted: Maybe you’ve heard him talk for a long time of how much he wants to get a Tattoo, or how he always wanted to learn to play the guitar, whatever it may be, this could be the time to make one of his dreams come true.

9) Events: Concerts, shows, sporting events; tickets to a particular event even if it’s before or after father’s day may be the perfect gift. Remember the WWE will be Live in Costa Rica June 11th, the CTCC will have its next date July 9th, famous tenor José Carreras will be giving a concert in October, the Costa Rican Philharmonic Orchestra has several concerts this year, and the FIA 2017 will have a variety of events.
