The city of Limón is probably not the first, (or second or third), place that comes to mind when you are considering tours in Costa Rica, the Caribbean coast is beautiful, but many do not find the city as appealing. A new project denominated Explore Limón, is hoping to help tourists, both national and foreigners to see Limón with new eyes.

Entrepreneur Sergio Bolaños, is hoping to rescue the history and culture of this province by taking tourists through a tour of the city, its historical buildings and key sites.

Limón is a colorful and bohemian region, full of warm traditions, here, the indigenous, Afro-Caribbean, Spanish, Asian and Latin cultures converge, and the result translates in their art, food and music.

The Explore Limón tour is a two hour and a half walking tour which is given in both English and Spanish. Tourists visit the old offices of the United Fruit Company, the municipal market, the Catholic Chuch, the Costa Rica Hotel, Parque Vargas, Liberty Hall (known as the Black Star Line), the old railroad, the Domino Club, the Tomas Guardia School, among other emblematic locations; the local gastronomy and music (calypso, gospel, reggae and blues) are also focal points during the tour.

Bolaños has lived in Limón for almost eight years, he was born and raised in San Francisco de Dos Ríos, San José, but he wanted a change of lifestyle and chose Limón as his destination, he graduated from Ecological Tourism; today he offers the guided tour to visitors that arrive to Limón in the different cruise ships, but also to any others that are interested in learning more about the roots and history of this coastal city. He hopes to include more sites in the future and that this initiative allows people to see Limón with new eyes.
