Doctors of the Hospital Mexico in Costa Rica removed a 34 kilogram tumor from the abdomen of a female patient.
The amazingly large tumor, which could be the biggest recorded so far in the world was located in the abdomen of Sonia Lopez, a woman that resides in the area of Tibas, San Jose, Costa Rica.
“The life of Sonia changed forever. A giant tumor of 34 kg in her ovaries was removed Monday and she is making a good recovery.
Due to its weight, it is considered to date, the biggest removed tumor of this type that has been recorded in the world.
The patient is recovering and she has even began the intake of liquids”, states the release by the Costa Rica Social Security Service (CCSS).
“A tumor of this type is not unusual, we are used to facing large tumors, maybe three a year with similar characteristics, but this size was something out of the ordinary. This type of tumor has the characteristic that it begins growing so fast that it poses a risk to the patient’s life”, explained surgeon Pablo Sibaja, who also commented that tumors like this usually are a combination of solid matter and liquid which is why they grow to a big mass.
A team of six surgeons were involved in the surgery that lasted for a little over two hours.
The patient weighed 123 kilograms before the surgery and after the procedure her weight was of 89 kg.
