The Costa Rican Railways Institute (Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarrile, INCOFER) and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) have made available to the public a mobile phone application called “Incofer Móvil” with alerts on changes in train service and delays.
The app also includes train schedules on the urban routes that connect Belén, Heredia, Alajuela and Cartago with San José.
With an estimated over 18,000 people riding the rails, railway authorities said they are counting on this mode of communication to be able to reach the largest number of people in the most immediate way in order to communicate important and up-to-the-minute information to users.
The service will be especially useful to stops in between main terminals where no officials are regularly stationed, said INCOFER Executive President Elizabeth Briceño in a press statement.
