The rural areas of Costa Rica are full of traditions that many times go unnoticed and that perhaps do not receive the credit deserved for their cultural and historic value; one of this traditions is the National Mules Festival.

Celebrated every year in February in the area of Parrita, Puntarenas, this tradition began in properties in Esterillos in 1989, it started as a form of entertainment, an informal community event where a few gathered to enjoy the many times challenging mule race, enjoy a BBQ and drinks among friends; as it is expected, mules will be mules, and the fun part about mule races is that mules don’t always do what their masters want them to do, their obstinate character makes for some fun and memorable moments during these events.

The mule festival has evolved a lot since the 90’s, it is now celebrated in the center of Parrita thanks to the work of local Aristides Porras, with time, some took the matter seriously and started training the mules like they would a horse or dog; in 2002 the event was declared of “National Interest” ; nowadays the National Mules Festival is one of the most expected events in this community, it gathers the attention of Costa Ricans from different parts of the country, this year it gathered over 40 registered competitors and it takes place in a mule racetrack; it also includes horseraces and many different activities for the entire family.

This event is also of great importance for the economy of Parrita; this year it took place from February 8th to the 18th. If you happen to be vacationing in the area of Parrita and want to experience a unique Costa Rican tradition the National Mules Festival won’t disappoint.
