A shopper in Scotland brought home something unexpected with his purchase of a Costa Rican pineapple this week.

The pineapple was shipped from Costa Rica as are all fresh pineapples with the crown, or green leaves attached to the top, to keep them from ripening too quickly. And this adventurous snake found that a convenient place to hide.

The Edinburgh grocery shopper called the Scottish Society for the Protection of Cruelty for Animals,  the agency which handles potentially dangerous cases involving animals, after he discovered the snake in his purchase after arriving home, said the UK Metro story.

The man purchased the tropical fruit at the German-owned chain store, Aldi.

According to local Scottish news reports, animal rescue officials had not been yet able to identify the snake.

Scottish Animal Rescue Officer Catherine Atterton said to Metro:

“It’s not every day that we get called out to attend to snakes found in peculiar places. I know not long ago there was a wee lizard found on a head of broccoli so I was quite excited to see what had stowed away on this pineapple. We’re glad we were called out, as without proper care, the snake wouldn’t survive our climate.”
