Costa Rican police were busy this weekend. They arrested eight members of a drug and crime ring in Jacó, and a Honduran trucker near the Nicaraguan border with cocaine hidden in his rig.

This truck entered the country July 6, and when it attempted to leave Costa Rica Saturday near Los Chiles in northern Alajuela province, police acted on confidential information, and searched the truck. They detected 30 kilos of cocaine expertly stashed inside the vehicle’s axels, said the Public Security Ministry

The Costa Rican drug control police arrested Mr. Figueroa (31), of Honduran nationality, in connection with the hidden drugs.

So far in 2017, Costa Rican police, working on ocean and land patrols, and in coordination with the Coast Guard and also international support, has seized more than eight tons of cocaine. They have also broken up 68 criminal drug organizations of which 15 were involved in international drug trafficking, said the ministry.

Also this weekend, eight men were arrested at Playa Herradura near Jacó beach in the county of Garabito, in the central Pacific region of the Puntarenas province. The men were detained while traveling in two vehicles after police were alerted as to their activities.

The men are being held for alleged involvement with crimes including acting as hitmen, robbers, and engaging in drug trafficking. At the time of the arrests the men were carrying two firearms, three magazines, 27 grams of cocaine, a bulletproof vest, a balaclava, and more than 60 rounds of ammunition, said police.

These men were listed as having the last names Gómez, Sánchez, Cerdas, Quintero, Robles, Avendaño, León, and Herrera, all of whom had existing arrest orders.

Police said they have a constant presence in the central Pacific region to “strengthen citizen security of those who inhabit this region, as well as the tourists who visit it.”
