The group responsible for a shipment of 133 kilos of cocaine hidden in Costa Rican pineapples have been identified as the Kinahan Cartel. The cocaine was discovered in pineapples specially outfitted with waxy, yellow tubes in which the cocaine was hidden. The cocaine was discovered on August 14, aboard a Spanish boat registered as carrying bananas, on its way to Cork, Ireland. The boat was intercepted, according to the Ministerio de Seguro Publico, in the port of Moin de Limon.

The Kinahan Cartel is based in Dublin, Ireland’s capital, and is allegedly run by Christy Kinahan and her son, Daniel Kinahan. Daniel is a well known boxing promoter, who currently lives in Costa del Sol, Spain. The value of the intercepted cocaine is 10 million euros, or 6.5 million colones.

According to Ireland’s Sun Newspaper, “Boats (carrying drugs) go directly from Central America to Ireland, and every shipment of pineapples is at risk of being compromised by drug smugglers. Costa Rica is one of the main exporters of pineapples to Ireland and it looks like Daniel Kinahan and his gang have exploited this as a direct way to sneak drugs into Ireland.”
The Kinahan Cartel has grown ever more powerful in recent years, and is suspected of having flooded Ireland with drugs for over a year. Additionally, they are suspected of violent assassinations of their competitors in several European capitals.
