The director of the National Meteorological Institute (IMN), Juan Carlos Fallas, after meeting with the President’s Governing Council today, said that there is possibility of afternoon rains today, tomorrow, and Wednesday, and a possible arrival of a tropical weather system over the weekend.
“We are assessing the presence of tropical system number 43 for the weekend, which means that we are monitoring, we will see what characteristics it has, it will not necessarily impact the country, but we are in the process of monitoring the situation in which we left the storm Nate and to inform and avoid inappropriate use of social networks to confuse people,” said Fallas.
Fallas called for calm, saying weather over the next few days should be relatively calm with some “significant cloudiness” and rainy conditions likely in mountainous areas of the Pacific slope and the Central Valley.
“The trend in the next few hours is a concentration of rainfall, the trend for tomorrow is the same with a good weather trend, however, during the day the rains are going to be present but will not be intense,” he said.
To tend to the road and bridge destruction caused by the heavy rainfall in recent weeks, which culminated in Tropical Storm Nate late last week, the Costa Rican government will seek a US$30 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), said Helio Fallas Venegas, Costa Rica’s finance minster.
The bank has pledged a $200,000 donation, and the Central American Integration Bank is chipping in US$250,000, but those funds, together with Costa Rica’s emergency funds are insufficient to address the medium and long term rebuilding that will need to take place, said the finance minister.
Meanwhile, Luis Guillermo Solis, president of the Republic, explained that he has suspend the prostate surgery he had scheduled for this week, because “it is not convenient to be away for a long time because of the emergency.”
