The Chancellor of the Republic, Manuel A. González Sanz, formally inaugurated the Costa Rican Embassy in Australia during his working visit to the Asia Pacific island.

In the activity, Minister González described the opening as a great step for Costa Rican diplomacy, and a key move towards its strategic objective of consolidating its presence in the vast Asia Pacific region.

“This decision will allow Costa Rica to be more widely known, which will lead to new joint initiatives to strengthen bilateral ties in areas as varied as education, tourism and sustainable development, among others,” said González.

The Head of Protocol of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia, Lyndall Sachs, welcomed the Costa Rican decision and predicted closer relations between the two countries.

Meanwhile, the Costa Rican Ambassador to Australia, Jairo Hernández, said that the embassy’s location in the civic center of Canberra, the capital of Australia, “reflects the bright colors of our nature and friendly spirit of Costa Ricans.”

The event was attended by ambassadors from the Ibero-American countries accredited in Canberra, the European Union Ambassador to Australia, senior representatives of the Australian Chancellery, members of the Costa Rican community residing in the city, as well as academics, journalists and others.

With the opening of this location, Costa Rica joins the 13 Latin American countries that have an embassy down under.
