Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo in Guanacaste
Daniel Kung, president of ARA Tours, a special tourism operator in Costa Rica that focuses on golf packages, was on hand to comment on the award:
“Winning the award is a great honour for Costa Rica and definitely helps to boost the awareness on the destination. It is also a tribute to the pioneers who started long ago to promote the country as a golf destination. Costa Rica has grown tremendously as a destination in the past years and is a world leader in sustainable, eco-friendly tourism. The world-class golf courses, resorts and lodges embedded in rainforests and along coastlines reached a status of exclusive nature experiences, first in the US market and now also in Europe. Costa Rica is a ‘boutique’ destination for nature lovers and this captures the spirit of a growing amount of golf travelers.”
Most of the premier golf courses considered for the award are in the province of Guanacaste, and they are mostly located along Costa Rica’s Gold Coast, which includes pristine beach towns such as Playas del Coco and Playa Hermosa. Other locations include Puntarenas, also on the Pacific Coast, and Costa Rica’s Central Valley.
Here are just some of the golf courses that influenced the IAGTO’s selection of Costa Rica as the Golf Destination of the Year in Latin America:

- Reserva Conchal Golf Club in Playa Brasilito, Guanacaste
- La Iguana Golf Course at Los Suenos Marriott, Playa Herradura, Puntarenas
- Hacienda Pinilla in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste
- Punta Islita Executive Golf Course at Peninsula de Nicoya in Guanacaste
Earlier in November, the 9-hole golf course at Punta Islita made headlines in the tourism industry as Marriott International made the resort its 50th Autograph Collection property, which is the first of its kind in Central America.
