Juliana Lopez Sarrazola, a 22-year old Colombian bikini model and beauty queen who at one point faced the death penalty in the People{s Republic of China, will instead spend 15 years in prison. According to a wire report by Agencia EFE, MNiss Lopez plead guilty to one count of cocaine smuggling.
In the criminal court trial, Miss Lopez confessed that she agreed to smuggle cocaine into China because she needed funds to enter the Miss World Colombia pageant. For her role as a smuggler, she was supposed to be paid $2,500.
Court records show that Chinese judges handed a 15 year prison term instead of the death penalty or a life sentence because Miss Lopez showed a positive attitude despite her ordeal, and also because she apologized for her crime. The attorneys who represented Miss Lopez plan to appeal the sentence because she was threatened by a trafficker when she had second thoughts about smuggling.
The Costa Rica Star has previously reported on the arrest of Miss Lopez, who was also the 2015 Miss World Colombia contestant from Antioquia, a major coffee-producing region of Colombia. She was arrested along with her boyfriend at the Guangzhou airport in the capital of the southern Guangdong province of China. She was reportedly carrying more than 50 grams of cocaine in a package concealed inside her laptop computer.
According to the news report filed by Salud Hernandez-Mora for El Mundo, Miss Lopez is also a football player who grew up in Medellin within a comfortable middle class family. She had previously traveled to China to purchase cheap clothing and fashion accessories, which she resold in Colombia.
Prior to her arrest, Miss Lopez received an indecent proposal on Twitter to become a call girl for foreign businessmen, who would ostensibly pay her $1,2000 to spend a night in bed. The Ambassador to Colombia in Peking is currently assisting Miss Lopez and her boyfriend while they are in custody.
