The bridge connecting Panama and Costa Rica known as the “Sixaola Binational Bridge” was supposed to be ready in May this year, this did not happen, but the bridge shows an advance of 56%.

The move of border posts of each country was already completed, migration, customs, police and supervision of vegetables and animals commerce as well as the dismantling of the old train structure.

The new bridge will measure 260 meters in length and 17 meters wide, it is 62% in Costa Rica’s territory an 38% in Panama’s side and it replaces an old train structure that was destroyed in September of 2017.

According to the government this bridge will finally be completed in the first trimester of 2020. The structure will have two lanes, sidewalks and bike lanes.

The bridge is considered an important part of the tourism corridor which is being developed from the South Caribbean of Costa Rica and the East Caribbean of Panama. It will benefit the population in the frontier and those who normally use this route, it will also contribute to a comprehensive transportation system, affordable, efficient and secure. The idea is to facilitate the transportation of goods from the south and north frontiers without the need to go through the Centrall Valley and with more efficient times.

The cost of this infrastructure is estimated in US $25 million, $10 of which are coming in aspart from the Mesoamerican Infrastructure Fund and $7.5 provided by each country.
