Philando Castile, Alfred Olango have two things in common, they were both black and they were both killed by the police in what appears to be cases of police brutality; their shootings became quickly known worldwide thanks to videos that were shared on social media. Their cases join others such as Eric Garner’s case in New York over a year ago.

As a response to this now many high-profile athletes have raised their voice against police violence in the United States. NBA star LeBron James, tennis superstar Serena Williams and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick who has been joined by other NFL athletes as well as college football and college basketball athletes in his non-violence protest. Kaepernick generated controversy back in August when he refused to stand for the anthem, he later stated:

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Some speak out, others  kneel, others lock arms, others raise their arms with one goal in common, raising awareness on injustice and the importance of equal rights.
