EFE-Investigators from Costa Rica’s Technological Institute (TEC) are developing an app that will identify the different tree species and will aid with scientific research, tourism and tree conservation.

The TEC informed through a press release that the application, named “eFlora” will be in test phase during the next six months and is expected to be available to the public in 2017 in Apple and Google stores.

This tool will have a digital data base with the characteristics of 800 species of trees and photos, and will provide the name of the tree based on its leafs, flowers and fruit.

One of the objectives of “eFlora”, is that a person, combining information and technology is able to identify tree species in a clear and easy way.

The app can also be used as orientation for tour guides and for the communities to learn more about the trees in their region and also learn to value them.

“The eFlora application will generate a positive impact in the tourism industry providing the tour guides with a tool that will allow them to show visitors the richness of the flora in Costa Rica”, stated the investigator of the TEC School of Forest Engineering, Casia Soto.

Costa Rica is recognized internationally for its natural richness and it’s calculated that this country that holds a population of 4.7 million people is home to 4.5% of the biodiversity of the planet.

Tourism is one of the main economic engines of this Central American nation that every year receives around 2.6 million foreign tourists attracted by its natural beauties. / EFE
