After three months of strike, the labor unions of the education sector lifted the movement and will go back to work Monday, December 10, for the remaining 4 days of the 2018 school year.

Even though the fiscal reform was already approved by congress on second debate and the Labor Court ruled for a second time the strike of educators as illegal only one of the labor unions, SEC, had already returned to the schools last week.

However, after consulting their bases, the other two labor unions, ANDE and APSE , decided to return to class this Monday, only four days before the end of the year vacation period begins for this sector.

According to APSE they chose to lift the protests to “reassess the strategy to battle the terrible Law 9,635, and for the new projects that are being planned against the well-being of the Costa Rican people”.

It is known that if the labor unions chose to maintain the strike, they would not have been able to go on vacation.

“We will go back to our jobs starting Monday, December 10, with our head held high, with plan knowledge that we did the impossible to defend the supreme interests of the Nation and the well-being of the Costa Rican people”, stated APSE.

The representatives of ANDE, however, did accept that their decision to go back to work, intended to guarantee the vacation period “that by Law corresponds to all workers of the Ministry of Public Education”.

“All people affiliated to ANDE suffered great pressure, movements, attacks from different sectors; they deserve and need a time to recover”, stated the press release.

Labor unions already presented their appeal to the ruling of the court declaring the strike illegal; the parties are now waiting on the resolution of the court to know whether the movement is finally declared legal or illegal and whether they will be getting the salaries received while they were not working deducted or not”.
