Banks and credit unions in Costa Rica started receiving payments of the annual end-of-the-year vehicle registration fee, called the marchamo, on November 1.

Vehicle owners have until December 31 to pay the 2018 marchamo fee to the National Insurance Institute.

This year, banks have diversified their offers to attract customers to pay at their site. Some 1.4 million vehicles in Costa Rica will need a registration to legally circulate come 2018.

Scotiabank has a plan for its clients who wish to to pay the fee in 3, 6 or 12-month installments without interest or commissions. The promotion is accompanied by the raffle of a 2017 Hyundai Tucson car, as well as 400 additional prizes in the form of AutoPits gift certificates. Only Scotiabank customers who pay the marchamo with a Scotiabank credit or debit card can take advantage of these offers.

Davivienda is also offering installment plans for those who wish to space out their payments, whose amount vary according to the make and year of the vehicle to be registered.

Banco Lafise offers similar possibilities to its clients including payment plans, and a raffle of gift cards.

Coopenae is entering all marchamo payers at their institution into a raffle of four trips to an international destination. The offer is available to all payers, not just credit union members. In addition, everyone who pays their marchamo at Coopenae will receive a free emergency dental consultation. Coopenae credit card holders can take advantage of an interest-free payment plan for their marchamo.

The state-owned Banco Nacional is raffling off 14 prizes of 500,000 colones and one trip to Cancun for two people for those who pay their marchamo at its offices.
