The eagle logo on Costa Rica’s national beer, Imperial, is now taking on new meaning, as the company sends out volunteers, called “Aguilas al Rescate” or “Eagles to the Rescue,” on different community improvement projects.
The company’s first initiative is being carried out in conjunction with the Costas Verdes foundation, and involves planting native trees along the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica along the popular surf and tourist beach of Jacó.
The saplings will receive year-round maintenance for the next five years by youth volunteers to ensure their survival through the changing seasons, and thus aid in the coast recovering its previous jungle-rich state.
The company which was recently noted for becoming “water positive” because it has modified manufacturing procedures so that it returns more water to the ecosystem than it takes out.
The project, called “Bosque Imperial” or “Imperial Forest”, aims to restore beaches to their previous states by regenerating native forests that naturally filter out swampy and brackish waters, and thus contribute to healthier and more attractive beaches and oceans.
“Since inception Costas Verdes has literally brought back the native coastal forest back to Playa Hermosa and Playa Guiones – creating tangible benefits to the local communities,” said Costas Verdes organizers.
Costas Verdes was founded in 2009 by a group of young professionals (with a passion for surfing) who decided to bring back the native forest to some of Costa Rica’s most important surfing beaches. Particularly, Playa Hermosa and Playa Guiones – both which had remained barren for decades after being deforested, according to the non-profit foundation’s website.
“Now we see many brown coasts, but formerly they were green, that was Costa Rica, and it is precisely what distinguishes this country, that the forest reaches all the way to the sea. There are some beaches that have not had a problem, like Manuel Antonio, whose forests reaches to the sea and that is why it is so important for Costa Rican tourism, so the objective is to grab beaches that have not had the same luck … turn them into parks through reforestation and in coordination with the community, and the public and private sectors,” said Costas Verdes executive director, Daniel Uribe.
Volunteers with Eagles to the Rescue will be included in a database compiled by Cerveza Imperial to aid in this and future social impact projects, said Juan Jose Altmann, Imperial manager.
Imperial (Cerveza Imperial) is a Costa Rican brand of beer, manufactured by the Florida Ice & Farm Company (FIFCO). Imperial, a lager, was first produced by the Ortega brewery in 1924 and is the most popular beer in Costa Rica. It has spun off Imperial Light and Imperial Silver. FIFCO produces other beers including its Pilsen, Bavaria, and Rock Ice brands.
