The Joseph Ratzinger-Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation has organized an international congress in Costa Rica from November 29 to December 1, 2017 in which Pope Francis’ “Laudato Si” and speeches on the environment by Benedict XVI will be the main themes, reported Papal news sources.

Pope Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si” is being used to create a tool to measure and rank countries’ efforts in human and environmental development.

The congress will culminate in the establishment of an observatory dedicated to implementing the vision of the Pop’s environmental proposals around the world.

The observatory aims to support research and, “to provide nations’ governments an absolutely academic tool … to promote positive change, which is what the Pope is asking us to do, and it would be our major contribution with this symposium,” said Fernando Sanchez, head of the Catholic University of Costa Rica, in an interview with the U.S. National Catholic Reporter.

At the congress later this year, theologians and scientists will debate and evaluate the measures that society should adopt to deal with climate change. A kind of ecological barometer will be created, so each country can see how it is holding up to Laudato si’s parameters on caring for the environment.

“The Catholic University of Costa Rica has an important project with which it will measure the physical and social indexes in regard to environmental changes in order to be able to measure how much effort people are putting into taking care of the ‘common home’,” said Father Federico Lombardi, Ratzinger Foundation president.

With this meeting, the world’s leading theologians hope to make people aware about caring for the planet in a way that is as much scientifical as theological and spiritual.

“It will be a study that will measure not only the development of climate change, but also the way we live with it and fight against it,” added Lombardi.

With this encyclical, “the Holy See hopes to do something about climate change by uniting people in a common effort in order to create a more sustainable world,” according to a report on the congress in Romereports.com.
