Costa Rica’s tourist minister, Mauricio Ventura, announced today a new direct route on Southwest between Florida and Costa Rica.

Starting November 5, just in time for winter travel from the U.S., the airline will operate a daily connection between the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San José, Costa Rica.

To celebrate this new route, the airline is offering one-way promotional fares of US$89 on the Fort Lauderdale – Costa Rica route (the fare does not include the Costa Rica exit tax) for travel between November 7, 2017 and January 7, 2018. Details can be found at the airline’s website.

This expands the popular airline’s offerings for travel in and out of Costa Rica which currently include service to and from Baltimore and Houston to both of Costa Rica’s international airports – San José and Liberia. In 2015, the airline selected Costa Rica as its first Central American destination.

The flight will operate on a Boeing 737-700 aircraft, with a capacity for 143 passengers.

Ventura explained at a press conference that, “Negotiations with the airline successfully concluded on April 26th, with the achievement of this important flight … that will connect travelers with destinations such as Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Indianapolis, Orlando, Raleigh-Durham, and other cities … giving more opportunities for tourists from these regions to fly to our country.”

Bill Tierney, General Director of Marketing for Southwest said the airline was a favorite carrier due to perks such as free luggage, no fees for itinerary changes, and good service, saying, “Our new international facility at Fort Lauderdale Airport offers an easy immigration experience that is close to shopping, and the beach, with fast connections to many other cities in the Southwest network.”

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) has nearly 46,000 employees and transports more than 100 million customers annually. Southwest and its subsidiary AirTran Airways operate more than 3,400 flights a day, serving 93 destinations in the United States and five other countries, according to the company website.
